On our excursion to Cockatoo Island, we learnt of the infamous escape by Frederick Ward. In 1856 Frederick Ward, was sentenced to seven years on Cockatoo Island for stealing horses. In September 1863 Mary Bugg, his devoted part-Aboriginal wife, took the risk and swam to the island and left him the tools he needed to break free. Two nights later Ward and his mate Fred Britten made a swim for it.
Imagine you have just broken from the cell that we visited on the excursion and have slipped through the tunnel down towards the docks.
You are almost off the island but before you leave you must clean up all the rubbish in the water!
If we cannot clear the water of pollution there is no hope we will make it across the harbour to freedom.
